From a residents' family - Riverhead Hall

"Once he moved to Riverhead Hall and settled in, he realised himself that this was the best place for him." - Glenda Walker and Dottie Powell

When Horace Speck fell in his home, his daughters Glenda Walker and Dottie Powell were told by the hospital doctors that it would be no longer possible for him to remain in his home, unless significant improvement was seen.

The 92-year-old's accident cost him his mobility and while he was in hospital the sisters began looking for a suitable care home.

The pair visited three homes in the Driffield area of east Yorkshire but they knew only one of them was good enough for their dad – Riverhead Hall, which is owned by Wellburn Care Homes.

Horace moved to Riverhead Hall in 2008 and has not looked back since. He spends his mornings in the lounge and following lunch he goes to his room where he indulges his passion for keeping up with the latest news and sport.

Horace enjoys one-to-one company and knowing his interests, there is no shortage of staff wishing to spend time talking with him about what is going on in the world, or about the latest football news.

During the 2010 World Cup he even had a wall-chart in his room and a member of staff would keep it up-to-date for him.

Two years on and Glenda and Dottie know they made the right decision.

Glenda says: "When the hospital broached the subject of going into a home he was very upset but realised we would be unable to cope with his everyday needs at home. Once he moved to Riverhead Hall and settled in, he realised himself that this was the best place for him."

"Everything about Riverhead Hall is fantastic, whether that is the excellent home-cooked food or the fact staff spend time getting to know each resident and identifying what their hobbies or interests are."
